Origin
Tsubaki's origins are a mystery and the major compelling force behind her journey around the world. She has no memories of her first few centuries as an axolotl. All that she knows is that at some point in her long life, she was left behind in a koi pond in deeply rural Othard by a traveler. At least, that is the ancient oral tradition that is passed down in the region she spent most of her very long life within. Up until the time of her awakening as an Auspice, which occurs at the animal's thousandth year of life, the cheeky axolotl lived at the koi pond at the heart of this small farming village.
Since this peculiar creature has dwelled within the koi pond for centuries, the villagers naturally began to pass along legends and stories of her existence. As the place of origin of Axolotls on Hydaelyn is largely unknown and few have even seen one, the villagers were left to speculate on just what she was. Some believed her to be a baby water dragon of some sort, or perhaps even a new Kami. That is the origin of one of the two names she was bestowed; Kamio. In the old way of words, it means the Beginning of a Kami. The more popular moniker she was given was Tsubaki, named after the flowers that her pink frilled gills bear some resemblance to. She seemed to respond best when called by that name as it appealed more to her vanity, so it became the norm.
In the last couple hundred years of her formative years as an auspice, Tsubaki began to awaken some of her latent power. The first of her magic to awaken was the ability to share the naturally exquisite regenerative capabilities of the axolotl. Being a particularly blessed creature, this ability is much greater than it would be in the natural world. She started to use this ability to heal the sickly and the wounded, if they came close enough to her pond. Over time, this formed a legend that something in the pond had restorative properties, and many of the villagers correctly likened it to her. The sick and wounded from then on were kept in the homes closest to the pond. At night, she would emerge from her aquatic refuge and tend to her flock.
It was the tremendous amounts of love, respect and adoration that the villagers gave little Tsubaki that formed her rather eccentric and downright narcissistic attitude. Her desire to help all her adoring fans fostered her nurturing, motherly side. She knew it got her praise, and that was exactly what she coveted more than anything. It was during this time that the little Axolotl started to get visits from an actual auspice, who had fully awoken after surviving beyond his thousand years. He had heard rumors from travelers of a pond with mysterious healing attributes, and thought he may well find another of his kind there. Though Tsubaki hadn't yet reached the age of awakening, it was clear to her new caller that she was near to her thousand year landmark where her powers would fully manifest.
Ryusai, a koi-scaled dragon from the mountains, continued to come to visit Tsubaki in her pond. At times, he'd even take her away with him on some short-lived journeys. He too was from a remote community, dwelling at the top of a neighboring mountain. The two became fast friends. Their occasional treks about the local region continued, even after Tsubaki fully awoke as an auspice. Things were going great between the two. There were even talks of venturing far and wide to meet others like them, or help the little ones who hadn't quite awakened yet. There were some minor disagreements on how best to achieve their goals, but nothing is small to the alien eccentricities of an auspice. Something little to a logical human mind can be the greatest offense an auspice could suffer! Their relationship began to degrade as those fights led to more and more. Eventually, they parted ways, though Tsubaki lost the memory surrounding the exact circumstances. She only knew that he went off to live beneath the ocean, where he presided over a clan of Sea Raen.
Tsubaki lost the only friend and peer she had ever known. She loved the villagers, but they were more like subjects to the auspice. She returned her focus to tending to their woes and receiving their offerings and praise. This only further deepened her arrogance. It was no longer enough now that she had seen more of the world, however. She began to journey around and bless others with her restorative powers over time. On these quests, Tsubaki met many Sea Raens who bore scales similar to Ryusai. Though she'd never admit it, she missed her friend greatly. She would follow along these artists who bore his scales and went on journeys of their own to paint the world and bring the experiences back to their home under the water. Though she acted as if her only desire was to be painted by them — something that was no doubt also true due to her insane levels of vanity — she secretly wanted to learn as much about Ryusai as she could. She met many more people in her travels but always returned home to the village. Those followers and that village were special to her. At least for as long as it stood.
Many years later, the Imperials pushed into Othard. They rampaged across the land and laid waste to lots of helpless territories. Her village was not spared. Tsubaki attempted to flee, and was shot down. She was hit in several places, including the head. The axolotl auspice wouldn't die that easily. She has mystical powers of regeneration, after all. Even a normal axolotl can regrow parts of its brain, so repairing the injuries was child's play to her. She survived and managed to escape, but her home was no more. The reason she can't recall where she was born, certain memories forged in the village or the exact reasons she and Ryusai's friendship ended are largely because of her traumatic brain injury. The wounds healed, but the memories could not be restored.
With nowhere to call home and no friends left in the world, Tsubaki left it all behind. She sought out the Pearls, the Sea Raen communities beneath the sea. She wanted to make up with Ryusai, but he was no longer there. A revolt of some sort had fractured his people, and he tore off on his own as a result. She visited the Pearls a few more times, hoping he'd return, but he never did. Finally, over the years, she decided it was time to look for her place of origin. Maybe she could find family there. She headed off for Eorzea as the first step, as she had heard there was a lot of travelers hailing from there who might well be able to help in her search.
Auspicious Abilities
Tsubaki has abilities themed after axolotls and salamanders in general. She is not a particularly powerful creature beyond her restorative capabilities, mostly because she's a bit too dense and stubborn to use her abilities in ways that would actually make her very dangerous. It just isn't cute, and that's one thing she won't forego!
- Regeneration: Tsubaki is capable of regenerating from even the most extreme damage. There's certainly ways to kill her, but it would take a lot of trying! She is able to extend this ability to others on a lesser degree. She can heal others of most wounds, though it takes time. Minor injuries may only take a moment, but anything life threatening could take hours or even days. The upside is there is absolutely no scarring, and she can even regrow another's a limb through cellular regeneration if given enough time.
- Metamorphosis: Tsubaki is capable of limited shapeshifting. She can't grow beyond about five fulms and three ilms, but she can manipulate her body in a lot of ways. It takes a lot out of her. A major transformation can exhaust her greatly, unless she has assumed that particular form many times. Turning to her natural animalistic axolotl form and back to her humanoid form are relatively easy these days, as she has done it hundreds of times. Though she could turn herself into a brutal living weapon, she never would, as it simply is not cute. That is the major limiting factor to her abilities.
- Water Magic: Tsubaki is able to use water elemental magic. It is her only viable form of defense, as she is very physically weak. The magic she has at her disposal is also not particularly threatening to one's life, but it's enough to deter most attackers.
- Familiar: Tsubaki is able to summon a leech familiar. It is cute, blubbery and blue. That is about the extent of its usefulness. It can use very limited water magic and if it manages to bite you, then it might hurt a little. Tsubaki uses the goop that this creature excretes to heal other people. She doesn't have to for any reason, but she's an idiot, and thinks it helps. Yuck!
