YOUTH
Born to a humble couple - her father a librarian of the Church of Halone on behalf of House Haillenarte and her mother a chocobokeep in the Holy Stables - Seluine spent her childhood playing in and exploring the streets of Ishgard's Foundation. Despite their lower rank, the Desrosiers family's work earned them a modest place in the Brume, where the only child Seluine was afforded a rare chance to study above her peers in the Pillars due to her father's connection to one of the great houses.
As a youth, Seluine grew up amidst the towering, imposing spires of the city, somewhat wary of the city's grand architecture and the nobility that surrounded her when she ventured to the upper levels. She knew the harsh truths of Ishgardian society that governed her family's life at a young age, acutely aware of her place on the ladder between nobility and common folk. Seluine grew quick-witted and tough, learning to navigate the culture and politics of her limited world with resilience.
The ongoing Dragonsong War was always lingering in the back of Seluine's mind, taking a toll on her psyche through the daily rigmarole of traversing the streets to attend lectures with upper-class peers who largely paid her no heed and the constant worry of what would befall her and her family. A chance encounter with a local merchant Roegadyn, known only to her as Loerswys, led to a friendship that told the tales of a world outside Ishgard. This sparked a burning desire to travel, and despite her parents' recriminations that greater Eorzea held no material benefit for a young, lower-class Elezen, she took to heart Loerswys' promise that greater things existed beyond the gates. She made off from the city in her 20s and under the advice of Loerswys, decided to set sail to the coasts of La Noscea.
THE SEVENTH UMBRAL CALAMITY
Finally feeling at ease among the clamor of Limsa Lominsa, Seluine joined the Arcanists' Guild and polished her magical skills among old, salt-stained tomes and her new comrades. She seemed to excel at plying spells with geometric precision, her sharp mind revealing a talent in the calculations required for harnessing the magical weave. Despite Limsa Lominsa's chaotic nature clashing with the order of her youth, Seluine carved a niche for herself and eventually took on contracts for the Maelstrom, offering her skills to protect merchant vessels from piracy and sahagin raiders.
The fall of Dalamud, however, brought Seluine's otherwise naive and flighty fancy to a heel. She witnessed the tearing of the sky and streaks of destruction from aboard a Company ship on the Rhotano Sea. The calamity did not touch Seluine physically, but in her heart, she worried deeply for her homeland. Although largely far removed from the incident, she wondered how the rumors of Bahamut's appearance and subsequent imprisonment came to bear for her family and comrades in Ishgard, and what that effect would have on the constant war.
Seluine participated briefly in the efforts to restore order in her new home, quickly rising to the ranks of Captain within the Maelstrom. Her small command of spellcasting specialists worked to secure the libraries of the Arcanists' Guild, which leant her recognition in the Grand Company. She continued to study with the Guild, but a nagging feeling tugged at her heartstrings in the following years of the calamity, dragging her mind to wander back to her ancestral home.
ADULTHOOD
In the five years following the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Seluine made a name for herself across the lands as a particularly gifted spellcaster. Her travels brought her across the great cities of Eorzea where she was able to further her studies of the arcane, particularly of the schools of obscure blue and offensive red magics. Although still an outstanding member of the Maelstrom, she more frequently found herself away from the coasts of La Noscea as news from home - both from her parents and her old merchant friend - led her closer to Coerthas, where memories of war insidiously planted root before years earlier.
Upon reaching her 30th year, Seluine returned to the Brume and to her parents, who despite the continuing conflict, still maintained a semi-comfortable lifestyle within the now-frozen city. At first came admonishment, but as the days went on, it was almost as if Seluine was transported back to her relatively carefree youth. She came and went as she wanted and with the access afforded to her by her further promoted librarian father, was able to pore over tomes that were unavailable to her as a young student.
But the chorus of Nidhogg began to sing.
In those fateful days, Seluine had found herself within the dusty repositories of House Haillenarte, dutifully seeking to follow in her father's footsteps and perhaps devote herself to the profession of bookkeeping. The call came, however, for able-bodied citizens to march against the primal Shiva and eventually the rising of Midgardsormr and Nidhogg. Hearing that the Grand Companies of Eorzea had to been enlisted to join the cause, Seluine once again took up arms for the Maelstrom, and participated in the defense of the Steps of Faith. The battles, long and arduous, were eventually won, but at great cost to the city of Ishgard and to Seluine, who had exhausted her knowledge of magic and seen the fall of several of her comrades.
The final push from the heretics that followed saw her childhood home ruined, as the Brume was the hardest hit before the tenuous peace that eventually fell over the city. Her home in shambles and her parents displaced, Seluine worked hard to secure a place within a Free Company that established itself to secure the material means to provide for herself and family, eventually landing in the lap of Luxury. The Free Company, comprised of a slew of races and professions across the land, had a base in the Firmament, which Seluine used to her advantage in order to secure a residence for herself and her parents. Despite her modest upbringing, she felt that she had finally earned a place among the more well-off citizenry of the city.
CURRENT
Seluine Desrosiers has, over the past year, traveled to further reaches of the star (and maybe another?), always ravenously educating herself on the finer arts of magic. She holds her family and the few friends she has extremely close, and is largely guarded around those that do not bear the arms of the Maelstrom or her Free Company. Seluine's ties to the gentry and nobility of Ishgard has completely dissolved, as she largely blames them for (what she believes is) the unsatisfactory treatment of her family in her youth. Always aware of her upbringing, she seeks to treat those that she considers comrades with equality.
In a currently calm period of her life, Seluine has taken to adventuring to the great libraries of Old Sharlayan and more recently, unraveling the mysteries across the seas of the New World. Always curious and armed with an insatiable need to learn, she traverses the land with mostly open arms.
