About
Mirja (pronounced "Miria") is a softspoken, gentle soul. Born and raised in a family of performers, her talents lie in song and dance - most notably song. Following in the footsteps of her father, she is a talented bard who enjoys playing soothing melodies for even the most troubled of souls. She never hesitates to put others before herself, and while she may not be an adventurer or skilled in combat, she prefers to aid others in the form of emotional support, whether it be in the form of playing you a song or preparing a homemade meal for you. Her selflessness often causes her to forget to take care of herself, but after a brief rest, she will be there to support your every endeavour. Her encouraging and gentle nature makes her seem very motherly, and bringing it up in conversation will always put a smile on her face.
That smile, however, is always accompanied by the faintest hint of sadness in her eyes. She has suffered multiple tragedies in her lengthy lifetime (most notably, losing her husband in the Garlean invasion of Ala Mhigo), but has found a coping mechanism in bringing joy to everyone around her. Your smile will always be mirrored by her own, and her arms are always open to lost souls, even if she is one herself.
Due to a head injury she sustained not many moons ago, Mirja also suffers from bouts of amnesia. Her memories from before the event are intact, but since sustaining her injury, she has trouble remembering little details such as the faces of those she's met before and places she's been to. She has a habit of writing said details down if she feels as though she will need them, but her constant memory loss makes her fear that she will forget important details about the people she has met. On multiple occasions, she has forgotten ever meeting certain people in the first place, causing them to become upset with her. She hesitates to create deep bonds with others, out of fear she will end up offending them as well. Nonetheless, she tries her best to be a source of joy and compassion to those around her, and will never turn down the opportunity to soothe those in need.
Background
Mirja's tragic tale begun long ago, in the far away country of Dalmasca. Her mother, a Veena whom had been exiled from the Skatay Range for not adhering to the Green Word, and her father, a Doman bard (whom was the reason for her mother's defiance) sought refuge in the neighbouring kingdom and gave birth to a lovely, spirited little girl. Despite her mother's exile, she gave her child a traditional Viera name - "Mirja", meaning "beloved". She was brought up being taught the arts of song and dance; song from her father, and dance from her mother. However, she always preferred song, spending most of her time with her father. She insisted on spending as much time with him as possible, as she knew he would die of old age long before he would have the chance to see her reach adulthood. Her childhood was a happy and loving one, and after the death of her father and her coming of age at 85, she decided to carry on his legacy by becoming a bard for a travelling song and dance troupe. She travelled all throughout the East, and eventually, the troupe decided to expand their horizons and perform in Eorzea.
Upon their arrival, the troupe continued to travel and put on performances, Mirja front and center as their star musician. However, when she first performed in Ala Mhigo, she had caught the attention of a dashing young man named Aevar Orielma. According to Mirja, he would flirt with all members of the troupe, including the men...but he had taken a particular liking to Mirja, continuously bringing her bouquets of flowers after her performances and asking her out on dates. She would always refuse, but every time the troupe would pay a visit to Ala Mhigo, he would always be there, awaiting her return with a bouquet in his hands. Eventually, she agreed to go on a date with him, on the one condition that it would be their first and their last. That condition was never met, however, as she quickly fell in love with his charm and his selflessness. They courted for 3 years, before becoming bonded shortly after Mirja's 94th birthday (hence her Ala Mhigan surname). Mirja eventually left the troupe after a decade of performing, instead opting to settle in Ala Mhigo with Aevar. Mirja continued to perform solo as Aevar found work as an adventurer.
When she received news regarding the death of her mother during the Garlean invasion of Dalmasca, they ended up trying to become parents themselves to alleviate some of the pain, but unfortunately, they were unable to. This pained Mirja even further, but nonetheless, their marriage was happy and fulfilling; they were wed for 13 years, before tragedy struck once more. When the Garleans invaded Ala Mhigo in 1552, Aevar was critically wounded in battle. He entrusted a fellow Ala Mhigan with a dying wish - to take Mirja and escape. The man fulfilled this wish, and she was able to flee successfully. Due to the shock of the event, she does not remember the face of her rescuer...but remembers the giant scar that laid across it.
Now widowed and without any remaining family members, Mirja fell into a deep depression, from which she has yet to recover from. Following the death of her husband, she isolated herself in her new abode for a decade, plucking strings to break the desolate silence and reminiscing on the past. Only recently has she begun to get out and live her life once more, after her lively Auri housekeeper encouraged her to go out and find her happiness, lest she succumbs to her depression. Now, she wanders continuously, attempting to drown her own sorrows by drowning those of others...even though the pain never seems to fade.
