The Flight from the Wood
Kaika Black’s life began, as all Viis do, under the strict isolationist laws of the Golmore Jungle. Though he spent some of his youth training with the bow—a necessary skill for any Viera, which he demonstrated an exceptional talent for—he eventually settled into the role of an artisan, crafting tools and small charms. He was known for his restless curiosity and a persistent, strictly forbidden, interest in the world outside of the jungle. He secretly collected scraps of information, old tomes, and rusted trinkets from the few non-Viera travelers the Wood occasionally encountered.
His eventual flight wasn't a sudden, defiant act, but a panicked reaction to exposure. One of his hidden caches of items from the "outside world" was discovered. The elders didn't banish him immediately, but they set a chilling sentence: a long, punishing period of spiritual penance and isolation meant to purge the "poison" of his curiosity. Kaika knew he wouldn't survive it, not physically, and certainly not mentally.
Under the cover of a rare, fierce thunderstorm, Kaika made his move, leaving his finely-crafted longbow behind so as not to immediately implicate himself. He knew the jungle, but its dangers were now doubled.
Fighting for Life on the Edge
His flight turned into a desperate, harrowing sprint. He knew the paths the jungle patrols used, but as he reached the perimeter, he was intercepted by a small pack of Coeurls, attracted by the scent of his fear and the storm’s disruption. It was a close-quarters, brutal fight.
Kaika, despite his skill with the bow, was left with only his sturdy hunting knife and the hard-won survival instincts of a jungle-dweller. He had to abandon the familiar distance of archery for savage, close-range combat. He managed to blind one Coeurl and dispatch another with a lucky, desperate thrust, but not without consequence. He earned a deep, ragged scar across his left shoulder and a permanent limp that would bother him on damp days—constant reminders of his savage escape. The encounter cemented a grim, practical ruthlessness in him. He learned, immediately and painfully, that the outside world had no patience for idealism, only teeth and claws.
A Shadow in the Sands
Kaika’s journey eventually led him to the sprawling, dazzling, and utterly overwhelming city of Ul'dah. The shift from the suffocating canopy of the jungle to the searing sun and packed crowds of the city was a sensory assault. Here, he chose his new life—a mercenary for hire. The demanding nature of mercenary work was perfect for him: it required minimal conversation, a talent for observation, and above all, effective violence. While he still utilizes his speed and stealth, he often opts for more conventional Ul'dahn weaponry rather than the bow, fearing its distinct, recognizable use would draw too much attention to his Viera origin.
His Viera ears, however, were an enormous liability. His presence would invite too many questions, too much scrutiny, and the risk of being found by those who might be sent from the Wood.
He commissioned a local leatherworker to craft a unique headpiece: a thick, dark leather coif that completely encased the tell-tale shape of his ears and upper skull. He told the craftsman it was a protective measure against sand and sun, and he never removes it in public. The coif, combined with his dark, hooded cloaks and the adoption of the surname "Black," became his new identity. Kaika Black, the silent Ul'dahn mercenary, became a shadow among the dunes, known for his speed, his efficiency, and the fact that he never removes his headpiece. His ears, his heritage, are his deepest, darkest secret, hidden literally and figuratively by the armor of his new life.
